Referral Strategy

92% of buyers trust referrals from people they know.

84% of buyers start their buying process with a referral.

The problem is that sellers rarely if ever ask for them.

A few weeks ago Matt Green from Sales Assembly contacted me with a creative way of asking for referrals.

Let’s break it down so you can replicate it yourself.

Step 1:

First, he reviewed my LinkedIn connections and identified people who fit his ideal client.

He threw them all into a Google Sheet with the following columns.

  • First Name

  • Last Name

  • LinkedIn URL

  • Title

  • LinkedIn Company URL

  • Know em?

Step 2:

He emailed me with 2 simple questions:

  1. Would I be open if he shared the list with me

  2. If yes, would I be comfortable forwarding an intro to those I knew

He shared an example of what the email would look like.

He wasn’t looking for me to co-sell or give an endorsement.

Only to forward the email with 4 words:

“Interested in an intro?”

If they say yes - I make the intro.

If they say no - none of my social capital has been used.

He did all of the heavy lifting for me.

It took me 2 minutes to mark an ‘x’ in the column and about 5 secs. to FWD the email.

Too easy.

The Results

Of the list of 45 people, I marked 9 I knew well.

Within 2 days 5 had agreed to an intro.

That’s a 55.56% conversion rate.

Matt now has 5 meetings with warm leads, without making a single cold call or email.

With results like those, I’d suggest you give it a try yourself.

Hope this was helpful.
